Refugees

The social group collection that I chose is the group called refugees. I chose this social group because I wanted to learn what their lives were like for them and how they felt during this. I want to learn about this social group because it would be interesting to know what they had to do during their lives and what it was like for them being homeless and being able find a new home. There have been a couple issues that refugees been facing in their home country with war or having to deal with certain criminals.

The stories that I’ve read about this social group show experiences such as millions of refugees used to become homeless who couldn’t find a job because they thought that they had diseases and some of the police officers didn’t want some of them to go into the countries or states. These experiences show how life was really hard for refugees because of events happening in history between wars and droughts. For example, in this article it shows how “The Dust Bowl that forced many families on the road wasn’t just caused by wind and topsoil… but severe droughts in the 1930s as well”. Other words or ways that the individuals in this social group might use to describe themselves are people who want to get a better life but are always having to escape from war or attacks in their countries. The experiences that I share with individuals in this social group is nothing. This experience is different than my experience because my life is easier than theirs because they have to go through so much from running away from wars to losing their stuff from smugglers in the Mediterranean.

The individuals in this social group are different from one another because refugees are still having a problem in life trying to find a home to live in since their homes were attacked or war broke out while other groups might have certain problems but might not be as bad as the refugees life. An example of this is the article, which explains how a family is fleeing Syria to have a better life and future instead of being killed or hurt in the home country. Successes that the group has faced has been being able to get accepted by the United States to go to the state and have a better life their then at their home countries. The podcast shared challenges that the group has faced such as only being allowed to ¨take 5 items like water, food, blacket, passport, shoes.” But if they took these items, the podcast shared that often smugglers would just steal it away from them. Certain perspectives that are missing from this collection are peoples opinions on how they think of refugees.

The challenges that individuals in this group face that other people outside the group might not understand is that Refugees had a very hard life from trying to get into the U.S and being in horrible camps or running away to get safety and not get killed or shot from criminals in their home country. I think that others can do the following to understand this social group: is because we have read and heard so much about the wars that have been happening in countries that Refugees used to live in before criminals or terrorists took them over from them. Assumptions that people might make about people who identify within this social group could be that they might respect you for surviving in the war and having to flee. Stereotypes can negatively affect individuals who identify within this group because they might not believe that Refugees lived through a hard life from fleeing or running away to stay safe and think they are probably here just to steal more types of job opportunities.  Stereotyping is wrong because you shouldn’t just think that because somebody is poor and is trying to get into your country just to live a better is a bad person if you don’t know what the individual has lived through.

Communities can create fundraisers or donations to help individuals within this social group. This will help the social group because it will allow Refugees to have food, water, or medical care while they are in the Refugee camps. What I can do in particular to help this social group is donating to fundraisers so Refugees have a better life in these camps while going into the U.S instead of being cramped with 10 different people in one small tent.
