In modern day society, many people are unaware or uneducated on many minority groups. I will be writing about refugees, which is a minority group made of many types of people. Refugees are people who are forced out of their home because of war, natural disaster, or persecution. Worldwide, there are over 65 million refugees, most of which coming from Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq, but they come from all over the world. When fleeing their country, these refugees have little food, water, clothes, shelter, and money. Some refugees die trying to escape their country. This paper will be about who exactly refugees are, the diversity inside of the group, and what these refugees need from us.
Stories about refugees in America show that these people just want to live their life. Refugees are often willing to give back to their community for being welcome about them coming into their country. In “Fresno family represents the plight of Syrian refugees” a Syrian refugee family living in Fresno, California is thankful for the hospitality they were receiving, so they taught their neighbors about how their Muslim faith spreads love and respect. Also, in “Refugee-staffed coffee shop in Calif. counters immigration backlash,” refugees opened a nonprofit coffee shop that only have refugee baristas. People often assume that refugees are bad people coming from corrupt countries, when in reality the majority of refugees just want a good life. According to this podcast, Refugees usually take very little with them when they flee a country, and usually those things are stolen. For those refugees to go through all of that just to be stereotyped, I believe that is not fair.
Uneducated people might classify “refugees” as one big similar group, but in reality refugees make up all different types of people. Refugees can come from war-torn countries like Syria or Afghanistan, places that suffer from natural disaster like Puerto Rico, or places whose governments are corrupt, like Venezuela. Refugees can be all types of people coming from all around the world, so you shouldn’t classify all refugees the same. People also think that refugees and immigrants are the same thing. Because of this, refugees are stereotyped even more. They are stereotyped as bad people who don’t pay taxes and people who are stealing our jobs. Actually, these theories have been debunked. According to this article, refugees do in fact pay taxes and don’t take jobs.
Almost anyone can help refugees. The first thing everyone has to do is educate themselves. Learn about refugees and break down stereotypes that might harm the community. Once you have done that, you could raise money to donate to charities that help refugees, or donate your time to volunteer work helping refugees. There are other ways to help refugees if you can’t donate money or time. This writing says that you can write to your elected officials and encourage them to refugee resettlement groups.
Refugee Rescue |
Refugees are people that simply want an equal chance as you and I. They are people escaping uninhabitable conditions looking for a new home. They are usually good people willing to give back to their community. They are often stereotyped and frowned upon for no reason. It’s time people learn to accept refugees and understand that they are good, hard working people.
