LGBTQ+

The social group collection that I chose is LGBTQ. I chose this social group because I have two dads and I want to learn about this social group because I wanted to learn more about it. Another reason I decided to pick this topic is because I want to see why some people see being gay is bad. I mean I get if it is religion, people are only saying that because of their religious background. Something I realized from my two dads is being gay is just what it is.

The stories that I’ve read about this social group show experiences such as violence, racism, and confusion.   These experiences show how LGBTQ people can be in danger of getting hurt just by coming out. They also show that we as a community need to come together to create a safe place that says, “hey you can tell us anything we won’t judge.”  Other words or ways that the individuals in this social group might use to describe themselves are free of judgement and free of themselves . The experiences that I share with individuals in this social group is I have two dads. This experience is (different or similar- choose one) than my experience because I have two dads and my brother is sorta gay ( or so he likes to say bi but everyone knows he is super gay) and growing up with two dads was kinda confusing at first but then I understood it more. Growing up I was not really  affected by this. I mean at times, some people would ask me why I have two dads. I would usually tell them, “What does it matter if I have two dads?”

The individuals in this social group are different from one another because they all share different experiences; some good, some bad, some in between. An example of this is when I was reading a LBGTQ story and It was about this girl being a lesbian and the first time she kissed a girl she was three and the parents of the girl found out and put a knife to her throat . Successes that the group has faced has been multiple marches and parades where not only LGBTQ people come but people from many different races come to celebrate. Where I live especially we usually have mabe two tree parades/marches and they can get pretty weird and to me the people who are in that category and even come out to show us who they really are I am shocked because it shows me that there is more than just one group there are tons  . Challenges that the group has faced is coming out to friends and family and also being rejected or being asked to change . Certain perspectives that are missing from this collection are not all LGBTQ people face a challenge when coming out and some people still decide to stay in the closet. For instance when my dad was growing up it was still illegal to marry a guy and for him coming out wasn’t so hard mostly because he doesn't care and also because his mother supported it.

The challenges that individuals in this group face that there people outside the group might not understand are when to come out to certain people. This  is because coming out to your family and friends might not be so hard they probably accept this but if you tell this to your church or boss and they don’t like it then you could get shunned or fired. I think that others can do the following to understand this social group: maybe read articles about gay people and their lives, watch movies or tv shows that host gay people, go to events that is about supporting gay rights or something.  Assumptions that people might make about people who identify within this social group could be that they might like guys . Stereotypes can negatively affect individuals who identify within this group because they are incomplete ad that is not.

Communities can put up a help center for LGBTQ  to help individuals within this social group. This will help the social group because this help center will connect to real life experiences and reading those might just help them come out . What I can do in particular to help this social group is be supportive
