There are many communities full of different individuals yet they all share something in common. For example people in the LGBTQ community are individually different but in the end they come together as one and go through the good and bad together.
The article in the Rolling Stone explains a certain event that many people in the LGBT community faced. It was June 1969 where the Stonewall Inn was invaded with police. This experience showed how gay people no longer have a place where they can be themselves and just express themselves whereas outside of that bar they aren't allowed to do so because it isn't normal. The individuals in this social group might use these words to describe themselves: proud, brave and risk takers. Many people shy away from being more open when the conversation of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender people come up. Many of it is due to religion, it's a sin if you're in a sexual relationship with someone sharing the same sex as you. But many people that are part of the LGBTQ community still come together and they don't care what people have to say. I shy away from coming out because I am afraid to constantly be talked about, I just haven't been able to do it.This experience is different than my experience because all the people who were involved with the event stood up for themselves were proud of themselves and who they are and that's completely the opposite of me.
The individuals in this social group are different from one another because they each prefer different sexiual orientations. An example of this in the article it shows what each letter means in LGBTQ. Successes that the group has faced is pride month for them to be themselves and meet new people.Challenges that the group has faced is has been is rejection, discrimination and fear.
The challenges that individuals in this group face that other people outside the group might not understand are hateful comments with really bad threats. For example,in The New York Times article a story talks about a man who is in army receives death threats because he is gay. I think that others can do the following to understand this social group by just being more open minded and not having many assumptions before hand. Assumptions that people might make about people who identify within this social group could be as little as two boys hugging or two girls holding hands many people assume they like each other. Here is a link to an article with a list of stereotypes within the community. Stereotypes can negatively affect individuals who identify within this group because it many let it get to them and they believe that's how everyone sees them as people . Stereotyping is wrong because people only do it not actually not knowing what it's like being part of that social group. Many sterotype the LGBTQ group and they dont know what it's like yet they still talk about it thinking they are positive that's the way it is.
Communities can come together in a positive loving way to help individuals within this social group. This will help the social group because they are going to feel all the positivity and not be embarrassed of who they are as a social group. What I can do in particular to help this social group is not look down on anyone in the social group and if I notice anyone being made fun of for their sexual orientation then I can put a stop to it.
