Immigrants

The social group collection that I chose is immigrants. I chose this social group because many of the stories show how hard life can be when you are an immigrant. I want to learn about this social group because they make up a big part of our population. While I have a personal connection to this group, it is also important for other people to understand the different experiences this group goes through and how they can support.

Modern Farmer

The stories that I’ve read about this social group show experiences such as living in the U.S. illegally. These experiences show how its really hard for someone to get into college. Other words or ways that the individuals in this social group might use to describe themselves are hopeful. The experiences that I share with individuals in this social group is that i have witnessed families suffer from unstable jobs. My family's experiences are somewhat similar to an immigrants family experience because, although my family are U.S. citizens they still struggled to keep a stable job because of the lack of education they had received.

The individuals in this social group are different from one another because they each have their own challenges. An example of this would be some face educational problems while some face difficulty with employment. Successes that the group has faced has been laws being passed that helped these hard working immigrants. Challenges that the group has faced is discrimination in the workplace. Certain perspectives that are missing from this collection is the suffering from the immigrant children. It is already difficult for immigrant children to get an education so it makes it that much harder when their parents don’t have a stable job.

The challenges that individuals in this group face that other people outside the group might not understand are that they are constantly scared. I think that others can do the following to understand this social group: donate goods, make donations, and possibly become a foster parent. Assumptions that people might make about people who identify within this social group could be that they don’t come here for the right reasons. Stereotypes can negatively affect individuals who identify within this group because they don’t take their struggles into consideration. Stereotyping is wrong because you are judging a whole social class based on what you've heard and seen and not what you've experienced.

Communities can come together to help individuals within this social group. This will help the social group because it will show them that they aren't alone and that other people believe in them. What I can do in particular to help this social group is donate whatever i can and raise awareness .
