Immigrants

The social group collection that I chose is Immigrants. I chose this social group because it’s an interesting topic. I want to learn about this social group because I have friends that are immigrants.

TIME

The stories that I’ve read about this social group show experiences such as getting stereotyped. In the podcast, it explains how police in Arizona make more money for pulling people over who look like an immigrant. These experiences show how quick to judge people are. Other experiences show immigrants going over the border with their children. They are doing this because they want to move to America since it’s safer and has more opportunity. Other words or ways that the individuals in this social group might use to describe themselves are foreigner. The experiences that I share with individuals in this social group is moving around a lot. This experience is similar to my experience because I moved to new places a lot.

The individuals in this social group are different from one another because there from different countries. An example of this is Mexicans and Muslims and Europeans. This article explains how people from Ellis Island traveled from Europe to America. Successes that the group has faced has been getting judged and harassed because of their race. Challenges that the group has faced is learning about and integrating into a new culture. Certain perspectives that are missing from this collection are from the culture there moving into.

The challenges that individuals in this group face that other people outside the group might not understand are being judged and stereotyped. I think that others can do the following to understand this social group: they could educate themselves on their culture or just talk to them. Assumptions that people might make about people who identify within this social group could be that there terrorists. Stereotypes can negatively affect individuals who identify within this group because people won't treat them equally. Stereotyping is wrong because it’s not always true.

Communities can support and teach to help individuals within this social group. This will help the social group because they may have not gotten a good education. What I can do in particular to help this social group is treat them equally.
