Asian Americans

The social group collection that I chose is the Japanese. I chose this social group because it was suggested to me by my teacher, Ms. Daniel. I want to learn about this social group because I am interested in the history of the culture.

The stories that I’ve read about this social group show experiences such as the Japanese Internment camps. These experiences show how during the war, all Japanese people in America were suspected to be a spy. Other words or ways that the individuals in this social group might use to describe themselves are Japs or chinks. The experiences that I share with individuals in this social group is I am called a chink and I’m stereotyped a lot for being asian. This experience is different than my experience because people say that stuff as a joke but for the Japanese it was serious.

The individuals in this social group are different from one another because the Chinese speak Mandarin, Wu, Yue, and Min but only one writing system while the Japanese only speak Japanese but have three different writing systems. Successes that the group has faced has been anime, high levels of educational achievement, are successful in the labor market, and Pearl Harbor. Challenges that the group has faced is the war between Japan and China. Certain perspectives that are missing from this collection are Asian culture has a lot of good values and we eat more than just rice.

The challenges that individuals in this group face that other people outside the group might not understand are not all of us are super smart with good grades and we don’t all do martial arts or say ching chong. I think that others can do the following to understand this social group: learn of asian tradition and values and learn the history of asian culture. Assumptions that people might make about people who identify within this social group could be we are good at math. Stereotypes can negatively affect individuals who identify within this group because they could be called names. Stereotyping is wrong because sometimes the stereotypes could be wrong and it’s just disrespectful.
