American Muslims

Many societies and groups have to face different problems and issues. The social group I will be writing about are American Muslims. This group has faced a lot of racism and diversity and they need to be seen so their problem can be fixed. In the writing below you will see American Muslims Identity, Diversity, and their Justice needed.

American Muslims have similarities in their identity when it comes to religious identity and national pride. In the article, “ “Muslims in America: Immigrants and those born in U.S. see life differently in many ways” it talks about how many immigrants and American Muslims are proud to be Muslim and are proud to be American. The article also talks about how both groups go to religious services and fast during Ramadan.

There are many types of Muslims in the U.S. Some could include Muslims that were born in the U.S., immigrants, and others that were born around the world. In the article, “Muslims in America: Immigrants and those born in U.S. see life differently in many ways” we see how Muslims have different lives depending on where they were born and if they are an immigrant or not. For instance the article talked about how immigrants have a more stronger socionomic foothold than Muslims born in the U.S   The article also talked about how U.S. born Muslims and immigrants are racially and ethnically diverse. Muslims in fact are so diverse that when surveyed at Pew Research Center in 2017 75% of them named different counties of origin. There are also differences in the U.S. between Muslims. For instance 51% of Muslims who were born in the U.S. with their parents say that they are black. Also 52% of Muslims who were born in the U.S. with one immigrant parent are likely categorized as white.

Many Muslims have to deal with racism. This is bad because this can affect them mentally and make them feel separated from other people that live in the U.S. In the article, “Court Sides with Muslim Job seeker rejected after wearing headscarf” talks about a girl who was rejected from Abercrombie & Fitch because she wears a headscarf. The girl ended up taking this to court and won a 8-1 vote. Also in the article, “After Attacks, headscarves mark Muslim women as targets” by Los Angeles Times shows a story about a 24 year old woman named Abdennabi and her friend Nahi who is 20. The story shows us how they were harrassed by an elderly white man in a cafe. The man said very racist thing to them and no one in the store did anything about it except make the man sit down. This just shows how racist communities can be to Muslims. This is injustice and unfair for a group of people that want to live normal lives.

So now the question is what can we do? Well first is that when we are outside and we see someone being discriminated step up and help them out. Don’t watch them and keep walking or eating. Go over their and help them. They are humans to and should be able to live a normal life. Also you can spread awareness about the issue. You can tell people about what American Muslims have to face and you can share articles or videos about how they are being discriminated. As for myself I can do the same. I can spread awareness about the issue and step up if someone needs it.
