The social group collection that I chose is African American. I chose this social group because I wanted to learn my culture. I want to learn about this social group because I wanted to see how the world was going on.

Black Lives Matter

The stories that I’ve read about this social group show experiences such as the Black Lives Matter movement and Martin Luther King Jr.’s Civil Rights Movement in the podcast. These experiences show how MLK and black lives matter protest was showing the same and different. For example in the podcast he said,  “These movements are in the same tree.” This means that MLK and the black lives matter movement have similar foundations. In this article it reviews how the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter started a movement that couldn’t have happened during Martin Luther King Jr.’s time. This couldn’t have happened because there was not a social media  and ways get it around in the 70’s. Other words or ways that the individuals in this social group might use to describe themselves are independent and respectful. The experiences that I share with individuals in this social group is getting racial profiling. This experience is similar than my experience because we share the same race.

Metro Times

The individuals in this social group are different from one another because we have different backgrounds. An example of this is Martin Luther King came in a late time and the newer generation is now being racially profiled. Successes that the group has faced has been the black lives matter movement with the help of Ferguson . Challenges that the group has faced is by African Americans scared to stand in front of cops with weapons. Certain perspectives that are missing from this collection are Trevon Martin.

NMAAHC

The challenges that individuals in this group face that other people outside the group might not understand are being scared of cops or segregation and racial profiling. I think that others can do the following to understand this social group: read the article about African American history and the new museum. Assumptions that people might make about people who identify within this social group could be ghetto and in a gang. Stereotypes can negatively affect individuals who identify within this group because black people steal. Stereotyping is wrong because it just wrong.

Communities can protest to help individuals within this social group. This will help the social group because it can show strong a communities is. What I can do in particular to help this social group is start a protest.
