They are Humans, Too.

They are Humans, Too.
In America today, we have many social groups that create our great Country. An example of one is Asian-Americans. Asian-Americans can create their own identities, they work hard to become successful to give their kids good lives, and they get stereotyped by many Americans.

The identity of an Asian-American is not any different than any other person in America. Everyone has different backgrounds but most families end up in America and that is what people have in common. Asian-Americans mostly come here to create a better life for them and their next generations to come. They make up 5.6% of the American population. When they move to America, they expect to start their lives over, to ensure a better life. By moving to America they work harder than before to be able to provide for the next generations to come.

In moving from these peoples home countries, they go through many struggles. One of those struggles includes money problems. Many Asian-Americans are coming from poorer countries and when they arrive to America, housing and food is much more expensive. For example in a podcast about Asian-Americans, Eddie Huang explains that his father opened many restaurants to make money and provide for his family, he opened many American style restaurants because many Americans perceive the restaurant's wrong and will not go to an asian restaurant.  Most of these individuals are working very hard to provide for their families, which is allowing the income of these families to rise, which is starting to make Asian-Americans a wealthier social group.

The challenges that individuals in this group face that other people outside the group might not understand are stereotypes. I think that others can do the following to understand this social group: talk to them, find out their backgrounds, and not judge them for their culture. Assumptions that people might make about people who identify within this social group could be all asians speak the same language, or all asians are super smart. Stereotypes can negatively affect individuals who identify within this group because you may say or think something offensive to these people. Stereotyping is wrong because you may not know what the person is going through.

By knowing more about this social group you may be able to see both sides of the story and not assume things about social groups. Our community can be more welcoming to Asian-Americans by having an open mind and learning about their culture.
