Latino/a

The social group collection that I chose is Latino/a Americans. I chose this social group because I am apart of this group, and I myself have experienced differences and changes over the past years. This specific group has also been put into the light recently due to current events. I want to learn about this social group because I could learn things from people that I have not already learned myself.
The individuals in this social group are different from one another because like other groups, they’re raised differently and held within different cultural environments growing up. An example of this is how some people don’t use orange pedals during the day of the dead which is shown in Disney’s “Coco” as some families use the orange pedals as directions for the dead on where to go to get back home. Successes that the group has faced has been in 1973 Cesar Chavez protested in order to help farmers, immigrants, and its workers as the way they were being treated was unacceptable, this caused the Labor Relations Act to be passed. Challenges that the group has faced was having to be placed in migrant camps and having to experience corrupt labor, with unfair wages in trade for lots of backbreaking work, and occasional racism. Certain perspectives that are missing from this collection are that, due to the position of this group, many families have to revert into going against their homes.
The challenges that individuals in this group face that other people outside the group might not understand are how this group is being put under a spotlight due to the current status of the US and are being called out in a way that's almost propaganda. I think that others can do the following to understand this social group: is to simply experience it yourself or to hear it from someone who has intensely experienced this. Assumptions that people might make about people who identify within this social group could be that all Latino/as are migrants or speak Spanish. Stereotypes can negatively affect individuals who identify within this group because the assumption is plain wrong, to begin with, and a common job that this group usually applies to could not match the skill tree of an individual who is a Latino/a.
