The social group collection that I chose is Latinos. I chose this social group because I am of that group of that race and the article seemed interesting. I want to learn about this social group because I wanted to see what people are writing about when they are researching this race.
The stories that I’ve read about this social group show experiences such as the article explaining how children are not speaking Spanish. These experiences show how children don't think it is necessary to speak Spanish. Other words or ways that the individuals in this social group might use to describe themselves are hard working or wrongly judged. The experiences that I share with individuals in this social group is my home is mostly English speaking and i am considered ‘White Washed’. This experience is similar to my experience because when I was a baby I only spoke Spanish then when I went to preschool, I started to only speak English.

The individuals in this social group are different from one another because Latinos that are born in America are most likely to adapt to a more white society whereas someone born in mexico would act different then the ones born and raised in America. An example of this is myself I am able to read, write, speak, and understand English but my dad who wasn't born in California can sort of speak and sort of understand English but his main language is Spanish. Successes that the group has faced has been Spanish Heritage Month. In the article, Spanish Heritage month starts on September 15th because of the independence day of Spanish speaking countries. Challenges that the group has faced is being misjudged and wrongly accused of being an illegal immigrant when they were born in America. Certain perspectives that are missing from this collection are Latinos that are not born in America that do come here legally.
The challenges that individuals in this group face that other people outside the group might not understand are the thoughts of deportation. In the podcast, it goes over how a while ago Latino-Americans were wrongfully deported to a place that they didn't know. I think that others can do the following to understand this social group: to not use stereotypes to base your knowledge of that race. Assumptions that people might make about people who identify within this social group could be that they don't speak English, probably illegal, a gang member, or they all can clean. Stereotypes can negatively affect individuals who identify within this group because that becomes the main reference point when they see Latinos or meet them. Stereotyping is wrong because a lot of the stereotypes are fabricated and generalized as how a certain demographic acts.

Communities can spend time like a vacation to places where there is a dominant Latino culture and see how Latinos are different in every country to help individuals within this social group. This will help the social group because it will lessen the perceived generalization of Latinos, and it will diversify the generalization. What I can do in particular to help this social group is be myself and show people that there is more diversity to Latinos than people realize.
