The social group collection that I chose is individuals with disabilities. I chose this social group because it sounded cool and interesting to learn about. I want to learn about this social group because I want to learn more about how people who have a disability and how they still live their lives without maybe an arm or leg.
The stories that I’ve read about this social group show experiences such as in the article about a teenager who wrestles without any legs but is still successful. These experiences show how he was able to overcome not having legs and becoming “Alabama’s Most Valuable Wrestler” in his weight class. The experiences that I share with individuals in this social group is I have a learning disability which has to do with reading. This experience is similar than my experience because I can relate to having a type of disability.
The individuals in this social group are different from one another because they don't have an arm. An example of this is in the podcast when a six year old boy did not have an arm. Successes that the group has faced has been having prosthetic arms and legs. For example, in the podcast, he talks about the advantages of 3D limbs. Challenges that the group has faced is that the young boy does not have arms. Certain perspectives that are missing from this collection are that some people think that even though he does not have an arm he can still do everything.
The challenges that individuals in this group face that other people outside the group might not understand are that they can't do everything sometimes as a person can if they have a real arm or leg. I think that others can do the following to understand this social group by helping them when they are struggling. Another success could be the video that these people with a learning disability could still get hired in a hair salon. Assumptions that people might make about people who identify within this social group could be hurtful. Stereotypes can negatively affect individuals who identify within this group because they maybe don't have an arm or a leg so they think negative on themself. Stereotyping is wrong because it can hurt people's feelings.
Communities can advertise to help individuals within this social group. This will help the social group because it can help raise money to be able to give kids arms and legs and whatever they need. What I can do in particular to help this social group is advertise and maybe get people to advertise stuff for the social group.
