Some people with disabilities are able to make the most of it. They turn the tables and find the good in their disabilities, conquer them even. Some great examples of people with disabilities I can give are Stephen Hawking, Aaron Fotheringham and Michael J. Fox. These people have many different disabilities, but have all lived to the fullest. Stephen Hawking a theoretical physicist, astrophysicist, cosmologist, and eminent scientist was diagnosed with ALS ( amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) at age 21. He was given two more years to live. He lived until he was 76-years-old. He had been paralyzed from head to toe for over thirty years and used a voice synthesizer to be able to communicate, and a wheelchair that he operated through slight movement of his head and eyes. This highly intelligent man was never stopped by ALS. He continued on with his life developing his activity as an exemplary researcher and professor. He is one of the most recognizable celebrities of our time. Aaron Fotheringham is one of the most inspirational disabled celebrities, he is also one of the most famous skaters in the world. His speciality? Wheelchair skating. During his childhood, Aaron underwent several failed hip operations that forced him to use a wheelchair permanently. Even so, he continued to practice a sport which he was passionate about adapting to his disability. He landed a great jump with a 180° turn in 2005, and in 2006 made his first somersault in wheelchair history. Michael J. Fox, the protagonist of “Back to the Future” was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1991 when he was only 29 years old and his career was in full success. He was told that he should withdraw from the stage, but he did not cease to be an actor. Although at first it was not easy to accept his illness (he fell into depression and alcoholism), in the last decade he has not stopped working and his foundation has already raised $233 million for Parkinson’s research. After more than 25 years and with the disease in a very advanced stage, Michael J. Fox continues to maintain his spirit of improvement.
Diversity(different communities in the group)
There are many different people and certain groups of people with certain disabilities. Some may not hear and these people are the most heard. Sign language helps these people communicate better. Many people that are, people say “special,” I think have the roughest life out of everyone because they didn’t chose to be this way, and are made fun of the most.
People with disabilities are often treated like “freaks,” but this is totally unfair. Some people are able to see past a persons disabilities, and are able to get the best out of them. They realize that these people are actually pretty fun to hang out with. Their personalities, their hobbies are like many of ours. So these people I think deserve more respect than they are given, because they are the most vulnerable to being bullied. These people are an amazing group of people, I have to admit that. I’ve heard that some people have taken them to prom, spent time with them at lunch, and have even stayed in contact with them for years because of how fun they are to hang out with. So the next time you see someone with a disability, make sure you make them your friend because they might just be your closest friend.
