Immigrants

A social group is a collection of people who interact with each other and share similar characteristics. The social group that I chose to write about are immigrants. One of the issues that immigrants face is finding a place to live like how this article says that “if you didn’t speak the language of the country you were living in, you didn’t have a social security number, you didn’t have tax history, and you couldn’t get a credit check; this would make it very hard to rent a place.” Every social group, like immigrants, have different identities, a great amount of diversity, and reasons to have justice in these social groups.

Identities interact as people who have migrated come into contact with people of the majority culture and with immigrants of both similar and different cultures. The stories such as this Newsela Article shows the experiences of being an immigrant such as, in this story the Juárez government has a list of asylum seekers waiting at the entrance port and since October, about 9,000 people have been put on the list and more arrive each day. Some words that immigrants would most likely use to describe themselves are hopeful for a new and better life in another country, and frightened for the journey ahead of them. I do not share many experiences with immigrants because I have never had to leave my country to a place where they spoke another language or leave to go work so my family could have money for food.

Individuals whom are immigrants can differ from each other in many ways such as their ethnicity or race to if they are immigrants in another country for work or for their family. In an article from cmsny.org, they talk about how throughout history, immigrants have achieved many successes, benefiting themselves, their families, and their communities. One of theses successes include how Eugene O’Neill, a son of an Irish immigrant, changed American drama when his poetical plays were among the first to be introduced into U.S. drama techniques of realism. A perspective that I have not been able to do a lot of research about is the kids whom are immigrants and have to get deported back to their country.

As Archbishop Gomez says “Immigration is a human rights test of our generation. It’s also a defining historical moment for America,” which is saying that what we do to help or stop immigration laws will define our human rights in the future. Some challenges that affect individuals in this group that others might have a hard time understanding are how securing work and a place to live is very difficult.  Also, they face the challenge of raising children with a good education. The best way I think that others can do to understand these challenges that immigrants face is just to ask them. This is the best way to learn unfiltered experiences from real people. Another good way to find unfiltered experiences is to look up biographies by immigrants that have stories to tell. Very common assumptions that people might make about individuals who identify with this group are how they are bringing crime with them into the country and that because they are immigrants they are “illegal immigrants.” In an article from pewtrusts.org, a research found that “the stress of being an immigrant can cause or worsen depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, and may contribute to suicidal thoughts.”

A social group is a collection of people who interact with each other and share similar characteristics, but contrast different identities, diversities, and justices. To support individuals in this group I will stop stereotyping immigrants into thinking they’re all “bad” and communities can do the same, or more, like ensuring that justice, in the form of fundamental legal protections and services, is available to them.
