For my social group, I chose cults. A cult is a system of religious veneration and devotion directed towards a particular figure or object. The cult I am researching is the Jonestown cult. I will talk about diversity, identity, and justice in the Jonestown cult.
The leader of this group was Rev. Jim Jones. The cult was made famous by Jones, who lead about 1,000 followers to the jungles of Guyana, to kill themselves by ‘drinking the Kool-Aid,’ or by drinking Flavor Aid laced with cyanide and valium. They cannot describe themselves, for they are all dead. I do not share these experiences with anyone. The purpose of this cult was to create a type of utopia.
The cult had a diverse ethnic population, comprised of mostly white people and African-Americans. Of the 918 who died that day, over 300 of them were children. Only thirty-three members survived.
The group needs no help, because they are all dead. If we were to help them while the group was alive, it would be to prevent the massive loss of life.
Sadly, we can’t do anything for this particular group, but we can try to prevent other losses of life that may happen due to a cult.
Very short, and straight to the point. Very powerful. Good job
