Asian Americans

There are many social groups that endure daily life in the US. Asian Americans are Americans of Asian descent. Asian Americans face stereotypes in their daily life. It is important to understand the Asian American identity, diversity that exists within the group and lastly what we can do to justify the group.

Eddie Huang
The stories I read about being part of the Asian American social group are that it can be hard for young Asian Americans like Eddie Huang to find their identity and how to accept it. Some might refer to themselves as “oriental”. Just like Eddie Huang I learned to accept myself as the ethnic guy in my friend group and learned to enjoy it.

Individuals that are Asian American are different from one another because they can have different Asian backgrounds such as Chinese, Japanese, Filipino etc. According to a New York Times article by Nicholas Kristof “The Asian Advantage” Asian Americans perform better in schools and are more likely to become doctors, scientists and other highly educated professionals. It’s not because Asian Americans have higher intelligence but more that they are hard-workers.

Every Asian American has to deal with getting called the wrong race which is understandable, it can be hard to distinguish similar looking Asian races. One assumption that is made too frequently about Asian Americans is that they excel in math and science. This can affect a young Asian child to have really high expectations for themselves and if they don’t meet those expectations they might be discouraged or find themselves in a slump.

What many people fail to comprehend is that not every Asian looking person is Chinese, Japanese or Korean there are a tremendous amount of Asian Americans that are Laotian, Mongolian, Cambodian etc.
