All social groups divide and section The People of the United States. The African American community is one of these social groups. This group has faced discrimination in the education system, stereotypes, and racism. African Americans are a diverse people that have different experiences and need justice for how they are treated.
Being part of the African American Community is no easy task. For example, just because of the Melanin in their skin, they get punished more severely in the education system. 50.7% of girls who had multiple in school suspensions in 2013 were African Americans. This clearly shows discrimination in the school system which “Brown vs the Board of Education” fought against. Morris, a researcher and activist states in this article “intersectionality means that for an African-American girl the disadvantages of being female are made worse by also being a racial minority.” This shows that with having the identity of being a girl and African American, can create unique challenges changing how they see themselves in this world.
Black Lives Matter |
Not all of the African American community is the same. In Baltimore, there is a black skating community while in Harlem there is a hip hop/rap community. This shows that while the African American community all have being African American in common, they are not all the same. While some people have a single story of African Americans being criminals, drug addicts, and other bad things. They should not stereotype this community that way or even at all because, in the end, this is a very diverse community.
Lady Justice |
The main challenge the African American community faces is racism. Being a white, middle class, girl, I have never experienced racism and it’s a very hard concept to grasp for me. The reason we have the Black Lives Matter Movement is because of white police officers murdering Mike Brown and the community wanting justice for those actions. The Civil Rights movement led by Martin Luther King wanted justice and equality for African Americans. As I stated in the last paragraph African Americans are too often stereotyped in a bad way and this is unjustified and unfair for this community because it affects them getting Jobs and making a living in this unjust world. To understand and support this community we need to look at this community not as a whole, but at every individual person. Overall the Black Community still faces racism and discrimination and they need justice and equality. The Symbol of our justice system is a blind woman holding a scale, hopefully, one day we can be as indiscrimatory as that symbol represents.
African Americans are a diverse people that have different experiences and need justice for how they are treated. Having the identity of being a girl and African American can create unique challenges changing how they see themselves in this world. People should not stereotype this community because it has a very diverse population. The Black Community faces racism and discrimination and they need justice and equality. Social groups divide us all in the United States but what would life be without them, would the world be utopia or spiral farther down the dark path it's already on.
