A Modern Injustice

A Modern Injustice
It has come to my attention that me and my fellow lgbtq+ have reached a new status in society that, while much more kind, has supplied a challenge all on it’s own: the misrepresentation of us in the modern world and continued injustices we face daily. We are just people who enjoy a relationship that does not necessarily have to be between an man and women. Throughout our existence, the lgbtq have faced much adversity betwixt the hate and mistreatment we face and have faced since times long past to the attempted extermination of our people in World War II. through history we have been there. We were there for almost the entirety of all of mankind's ascension to become the dominant species. Our presence was actually not scrutinised at first, but somewhere along the way people began to express spite for those who are not of the heterosexual variety. So, in light of events both recent and those long past, I believe that we as an advanced society of intellectuals, may need to take a  thorough examination of the lgbtq+’s role in the modern world and perhaps rethink the way we treat the lgbtq+.

First and foremost, we (lgbtq+) have been around since the societies of ages lost to time. We are people who have abnormal romantic or sexual relationships with other people, or essentially, we are those who do not fall under the label of heterosexual persuasion. I myself am a homosexual panromantic meaning that I don’t find girls sexually attractive, I would not be opposed to dating a woman for the romantic aspects of a relationship but would enjoy the full extent of a gay relationship. We are often seen as crimes against god, lost souls, or just unnatural but the way we see it it rather different. We see ourselves as people who are different, and as history would make evident, seen as monsters despite the fact that we are no more strange than any other diverse group of people. We are all about identity equality, discovering what we truly desire, what our identities mean to us, and using our identities and diversity to better understand life and humanity.

Part of our identity, as aforementioned is ironically enough, identity. The term lgbtq+ is actually a testament to our diversity, as it our flag, expressing all the different sections of our society. To illustrate, on the flag, each color represents a different group and the separation of each color contradicted by the closeness and connection of all of them on a single flag represents unity through our diversity. Sadly, this has been lost on the masses, as we are seen as one thing rather than a united group of people and thus, takes away from the power of our message. We are made up of people who celebrate unique relationships and lifestyles through romance, physical relations, physical appearance, ones mental identity, and the mixing of said attributes but we stand under one flags, just as how all the states may be very different but stand united under the single star spangled banner.

As previously mentioned, we have been around since the time of the ancients. Archaeologists have found remnants of us dating back so far as the time of the romans, greeks, and spartans in which the practice of homosexual relationships was celebrated and even commonplace. During this time it was seen as a testament to the manliness or the sheer awesomeness of a person. During festivals, people would even engage in crossdressing and stories would often glorify lgbtq+ figures. But as time went on, the catholic church had rose to power in europe, and as such, the ideas and morals had rose along side it. This would unfortunately include the vilification of  homesexual and other folk that did not have a perfectly heterosexual mind. The church began to persecute us and use their power to taint the once proud lgbtq+. In spite of these undeserved acts of hate, our society persisted through the centuries of torment, and in most recent times, have fought and one a place of at least some respect as fellow humans, but the fight continues as marriage and other simple rights are yet to be made available in many places and of course as with most fight for equality, hate it the fuel that burns the fires of such fights.

In order to combat the persevering injustice we may take many paths depending on who you are. If you yourself are lgbtq+, than don’t be shy, join the efforts of your people, express your pride and don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself and others. If you are a supporter than continue your support and stand up for those who are can’t stand and speak for those who can’t speak. If you are biased and and spiteful of us then perhaps taking the chance to better understand us or at least put effort forward to do so. And for you, the reader, please spread the word and keep an open mind, I often find that  hate and fear are often built upon a foundation of ignorance, so in order to eliminate hate, one must first eliminate ignorance. With this knowledge I encourage you, too help revise the mistreatment of fellow human beings and to help others to open their minds to us.
