Women

In 1920 the 19th amendment granted women the right to vote and then in 1960, women began to work due to so many male soldiers who were away fighting in WWll. They had to take up jobs in order to provide for their family and their needs. In 1972, the Equal Rights Amendment was passed by the U.S. Senate which was urged by the National Women's political party in 1923. These women that participated in each of these historical events/movements got involved for a reason. They worked hard to get the Equal Rights Amendment passed. They had to prove that just like men, they could work. All this proving, working, and dealing with backlash was so that their future generations wouldn’t have to deal with the sexism and the discrimination as they did. Yet, women nowadays still have to deal with patriarchy, social media representation, and economic inequality.

Women have different lives, and obviously, don’t deal with the same things. Some are moms, some aren’t. Some women immigrated to another country to have a better education. Other’s wanted to live somewhere where they are supported and aren’t weakened just because they are a female.  That’s the beauty of it, our background stories are apart of what makes us who we are and at the same time it can bring women together, along with inspiring eachother . Unfortunately, there are cases where we have no control in as women and have to deal with the same problems. According to the article, “What Are the Biggest Problems Women Face Today,” by Politico Magazine, it states that one of many problems women have to deal with is patriarchy.   Despite the education and the efforts you’ve shown, you don’t have a chance when you compete against a man. Women are instantly less qualified. In the article, it says that patriarchy convinces people that smart and well-built women represent a problem; a disruption to social order. It’s true, social media,  they don’t care about women’s political idea’s but instead, they care about their looks. Ask yourself this, why haven’t we had a female president? There are so many female politicians but no one ever pays attention to them unless its amateurish news about them.

After New York Times published an article of American film producer Harvey Weinstein and him being accused of harassing women over the decades, women have come out about sexual harassment and the things they’ve each experienced. Women to women, they’ve urged eachother to speak up and kept reminding each other that they have a voice. Thus was born the #MeToo movement and it went global. As much as this would help women come together and make society better it hasn't. Instead, they are being mocked and teased about it. In an article published by Politico, “Trump Mocks ‘Rules’ of  #MeToo Movement During Rally,” it quotes President Trump saying that “It’s a very scary time for young men in America.” These little comments are the reason why are never taken seriously. We try to put out our feelings and in return we get backlash. We get called “Attention seekers, weak, and emotional.” Even women who are athletes are given short shrift in social media. Media Smarts’ article, “Media Coverage of Women and Women’s Issues,” states that sports coverage on three network affiliates in Los Angeles had reported that only nine percent of airtime was devoted to women’s sports, and to the other 88 percent, it was dedicated to male athletes. Things like this are never talked about and shoved to the side. Sadly, social media and Patriarchy aren’t the only problems women face.

Institute for Women’s Policy Research indicates that women are known as the breadwinner in half of the American families with children,  but on average women continuously get paid less than men. Not only that but according to their research, if change continues at the same slow pace, it will take about 40 years until for women to get equal pay. What's even worse is that for colored women the rate of change is even slower. Hispanic women will wait until the year 2224 and black women until 2119. Women earn just half of what men earn over 15 years. These statistics are outrageous. Women can do the same work but not get paid enough? Yet again another problem that goes unrecognized.

Over the years women have worked as hard as they can to feel heard, to be treated equally. From passing laws to helping one another making they have someone they talk to. But there are big problems that do get unrecognized that need to be changed. The social media that misrepresented women is a big factor that affects lives,   keeps women from speaking up when it comes to politics, and economic inequality is what tires us because they keep trying to work as much as they can to make the same amount men make by doing the exact same job position. Women need to be seen, heard, and feel free to express themselves. The only way to do this is to make them feel welcomed and not discriminated.
