The Struggles of an Immigrant

The Struggles of an Immigrant

The social group collection that I chose is Immigrants. I chose this social group because lately over the news all I hear about is about the borders and how the border patrol is trying to prevent immigrants from coming into the U.S using many tactics. I want to learn about this social group because I want to know how big of a deal are immigrants and why do they pose a problem to the U.S.

The stories that I’ve read about this social group show experiences such as Alejandra Pinzon in an article called “Living in a homeland she barely knows after returning to Mexicowho was an illegal immigrant that came in american with her father at the age of 11 in hope of finding a better life for her daughter and when Alejandra was 17 she was thinking how would she get in college an when she couldn’t get into college because she was in the U.S illegally she thought of going to the mexico to graduate college and hope that a company would try to get a pass to come back to the U.S but unfortunately it didn’t work that way for her and she was deported in a country that was her native homeland and yet she didn’t know the language in her native homeland. These experiences show how some live of an immigrant can be harsh and stressful for some only to have a hope of getting a better life but then get shut down by these policies that breaks their dreams and ruin their lives. Other words or ways that the individuals in this social group might use to describe themselves are someone who is lost that is confused and stress because one question come to mind which is ‘where do I belong?’. The experiences that I share with individuals in this social group is that i know some family member that are trying to get t college but are also illegal immigrants that live are stressful because they don’t have car license to drives to there jobs . This experience is different than my experience because i don't have to worry that I'm going to get deported or if i can get to go to mexico to get my college degree and hope that I can come back to the U.S.

Sb 1070 The individuals in this social group are different from one another because some of the people have to know how they’ll get there college degree like in the article “Living in a homeland she barely knows after returning to Mexico” where there are people that have opinion on policies on immigrants and if people support the immigrants or are against them like in the podcast called “Immigration Policy Then and Now” which talks about an immigrants and other people opinion about the SB 1070 and who it is either a good thing or a bad thing. Challenges that the group has faced include reaching their goals. Certain perspectives that are missing from this collection are immigrants that came from overseas and from the northern borders or the history where immigration first became a problem like with the irish.

The challenges that individuals in this group face that other people outside the group might not understand are that most immigrant want to have a better life and are trying to avoid corruption from there home land and are looking for a way to make more money to support their families like in the article “Ciudad Juárez unprepared for new influx of migrants looking for safety”. I think that others can do the following to understand this social group by asking them their background on where they used to live and how was their life in their country and learn more by asking an immigrant why they came to america. Assumptions that people might make about people who identify within this social group could be that they do drugs and that they are here to corrupt our country and that they are a bad influence to others and that they are really violent always getting in trouble. Stereotypes can negatively affect individuals who identify within this group because they can give out false information that negatively affects them and how they live and they can make new policies against immigrants that can affect their job and these policies can affect immigrants trying to go to college making decisions that could affect their live. Stereotyping is wrong because these stereotypes can affect the way that someone or a social group may look to other people or what they represent and most time they represent something bad because of criticizers .

Communities can lifts policies from SB 1070 because it makes some people feel uncomfortable in where they live and SB 1070 make some immigrants panic when driving or nervous around them and these are some thing and also help some immigrants to get to college so that they can get a better future and these are a few thing to do to help individuals within this social group. This will help the social group because as it is some people like Alejandra Pinzon who was trying to get to college but was deported in the article Living in a homeland that she barely even know which talks about her background and how she was planning to go to college. What I can do in particular to help this social group is marching a protest about immigrants and make some article or blog about how the life of an immigrant is in the U.S and in Mexico an using actually facts and not my opinion.
