LGBTQ+

Love. Love is a power thing. Today I will be talking about love. More importantly I will be talking about who people love, for instance who the people of the LGBTQ+ community love. I with also go through the identity, diversity, justice, and action aspects of the community. I will explain pronouns,  struggles, successes, stereotypes, and solutions for people out of the community to understand more. Overall I believe love is love and you shouldn’t judge or belittle someone for who they love.

You hear stories of marches and riots and parades and laws, and all of these stories have made people stronger and bettered their identity. Identity is a funny thing, identity can be how one identifies, or it can be a familial representation. Within the LGBTQ community there are many, many different identities and pronouns. People can identify as bigender, cisgender, femme, and many more.  I can relate to this group because I am a part of this social group.

As I mentioned before, people can identify from many different pronouns and identities, and with identity comes diversity. There are so many ways a person can be diverse, especially with this group because according to this dictionary of helpful terms on the website “It’s Pronounced Metrosexual,” there are at least 99 ways to identify someone, and they all mean different things but instead of being diverse and separate they come together to be diverse and strong. Along with diversity come struggles and successes, and some of those include teaching lgbt history lessons in classrooms  and the transgender military policy.

The challenges that individuals in this group face that other people outside the group might not understand are bathroom policies, military policies, same sex marriage laws, and getting harassed daily from being close/ with a significant other. I think that others can understand this social group more by listening to stories and commentary, trying to relate to a person in this social group, and be socially conscience of others situations. Assumptions that people might make about people who identify within this social group could be all gay or lesbian people are trying to get with you, you can always spot out an individual that is apart of the LGBTQ community, also HIV/AIDS is a gay disease. Stereotypes can negatively affect individuals who identify within this group because if you “spot” a gay person and they are ultimately straight, they could possibly get offended. Also if by saying HIV/AIDS is a gay disease that could cause people to not want to be around someone of this community. Stereotyping is wrong because most stereotypes aren’t true, if you went around judging people by their stereotype you would never learn who they are.

Communities can stop ignoring the problems and thrive to protect this community more in order to help individuals within this social group. This will help the social group because if communities stop ignoring problems then the start of a solution can be rolled into play. What I can do in particular to help this social group is I could start getting more involved into the community more by going to more parades and marches. Another big thing people should try to understand is love is love.
